How can mudra enhance my yoga practice?

Mudras, help to focus the mind during your yoga and meditation practice. In yoga classes we mainly use the hand mudras, including these: 

 

  • Prana mudra: Middle and index fingers remain extended while the little finger, ring finger and thumb touch. It is believed to increase vitality. I gain a sense of wellbeing.

 

  • Gyan mudra: aka chin mudra. The tip of the thumb and index finger touch with the palms facing upward. It is believed to reduce stress and calm the mind in meditation. It gives me clarity.

 

  • Jnana mudra: Palms facing up, the hands rest on the knees in a seated position. It is believed to uplift your mood. I use it as a way to receive a San Kalpa/ intention/ action to take.

 

  • Anjali mudra: The palms of both hands are placed in front of the chest in a prayer position. It is often employed at the beginning and end of yoga class as a salutation. I use this for balance in tree pose. Press the thumbs to the ste

     

     

    rnum in the centre of the chest and lift up for a feeling of joy!

There are many other mudras in the body - these are just the hand gestures. Try practising these and see if they create any change in your mind, body, emotions or just a sense of focus?
